A Fashion Bloggers Guide To Building A Timeless Wedding Trousseau!

BY Apoorva | 27 Sep, 2017 | 2716 views | 5 min read

Wedding trousseau planning is one big chore if you ask us. What's new? What to pick? What's perfect for your body? So many questions, so little answers. So we asked Shereen Sikka Bharwani, the Founder & Creative Director of Love & Other Bugs about the perfect way to build a timeless wedding trousseau. Read on to know what she says!

Outfits That Will Make Your Trousseau Rock...

One of the biggest mistakes that brides make is loading their trousseau with heavy bridal outfits only. What you need to realise is that, post your wedding you are going to be invited to loads of dinners and functions where you will need lighter Indian outfits. So my list would be light anarkalis, dhoti pants, concept sarees, a cute crop top and lehenga set and 2-3 heavy couture pieces. Think of outfits that you can re-use in different ways rather than being stuck with just one designer lehenga!

Accessories To Choose...

When I started planning my wedding trousseau, the first thing I went for was a classic bag. I picked a Chanel as it’s timeless but you can opt for what suits you the most. A Judith Leiber clutch is something that I love. I prefer classic pieces that will last you forever. A Bvlgari watch or even an heirloom watch from your mom or grandmom is the perfect addition to your wedding trousseau.

Investing in jewellery...

A pair of solitaire earrings is a must-have! They can be paired in so many different ways so they are a solid investment. A gold choker necklace is the next one. Pick one that you can pair with a lehenga set as well as on a shirt. Versatility is key. A polki ranihaar is another stunning pick for a bridal trousseau. I also love heirloom pieces as they have emotions attached to them so you will always cherish those moments every time you wear them!

Which beauty and skincare products make for the perfect wedding trousseau?

Let’s start with makeup. The Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge is something that I recommend for all brides to be. You have to attend loads of functions and you don’t want to look caked up all the time. This is perfect for those occasions. Just a little dab on your lips and cheeks & you are ready! The MAC Ruby Woo is ideal for Indian skin tones so this one is a no-brainer pick. It’s the perfect red for all your Indian wear. I can’t live without my Maybelline New York Colossal Kajal & Mascara so those are the basic picks. For a flawless finish, pick the Chanel Vitalumière Aqua foundation and Lift Lumière concealer that is loaded with SPF as well. I also love the YSL Rouge Volupté collection which is fun and lovely!

After so much makeup, your skin needs rest so here is where skincare is important. The Kiko Milano makeup removing wipes are excellent. I love the toner from the Clinique line that keeps my skin fresh and plump. A good under eye cream is something that every bride must invest in as all the planning can take a toll on your sleep. Occasional masks are also important for a bride to be. The Glam Glow masks are the ones to pick! Don’t forget your hair! Because of the constant hairstyling and blow-drying, your hair can get damaged so opt for weekly or monthly hair spas. Moroccan Oil  & Kérastase hair spas work well for brides to be according to me!

What are your favourite labels when it comes to a wedding trousseau?

There are so many! Sabyasachi Mukherjee★ 4.9 is an absolute favourite. I also love Payal Khandwala and Shehla Khan★ 2.4 They both do such beautiful pieces. Shehla does lovely Indian wear as well as stunning tops and dresses that you can pick. Anamika Khanna★ 4.8 is another favourite since she has such a beautiful collection of alternative Indian wear. Right from capes to dhoti pants, her pieces are versatile and classic. Varun Bahl★ 4.9 does gorgeous bridal pieces. Rahul Mishra’s collection is something that I am loving currently for all its light pieces which are a must-have in your wedding trousseau.

And finally, what are your top tips for a WMG Bride to be while putting her wedding trousseau together?

  • When I started putting my trousseau together, I overloaded it which is something that I don’t recommend. Make a list of the things you want and stick to it. Organising is very important as it’s easy to get overwhelmed!
  • Don’t stress. A calm bride makes better decisions!
  • Always buy outfits with a little margin inside that can be altered later. You are usually at your fittest pre-wedding, which may not be the case post-wedding after all those dinner parties. Since you are investing a fortune, pick outfits that have a little alteration margin.
  • Shop smart. When I picked my Anamika Khanna lehenga for my wedding, I got two blouses done with it. One heavy one for the actual function and one plain one for later! That way I could wear that lehenga later and yet not look OTT. Invest in pieces that you can mix and match so that you get the maximum usage.
