#Exclusive: WMG Talks to Sabyasachi Mukherjee! ( Tips, To-dos and Timeless Looks!)

BY The WMG Bride | 04 Aug, 2015 | 5345 views | 4 min read

The moment you say bridal, the one designer who enters your mind is Sabya - with his old-school charm and new age silhouettes, he seems to have every bride in a complete tizzy. As he gears up for the next big event in his kitty, the Vogue wedding show that is up and coming on the 7th of August,  we caught this genius right under his busy schedule and asked him a few questions that you guys will love. Read up!sabyasachi1

Q1. What are some key pieces every bride must invest in?

Sabyasachi: A bride should buy beautiful shawls and sarees and classic accessories which can stand the test of time. Remember one thing - if you are going to incorporate a lot of fashion in your trousseau, you must remember that what you buy for your trousseau, you may not get a chance to wear it overnight. You wear them by and by. Eventually, when you do wear them, the fashion trends may have passed. So it is always best to invest in classic clothing because you never know when you are going to wear them next.

Q2. What does an ideal bridal trousseau look like ?

Sabysachi : A bride should invest in clothing which is a combination of designer and high street. It has to be compartmentalized into daywear, evening-wear, sports wear, lingerie, swimwear, travel and outdoor wear and finally, party wear. A common mistake that people make is that they only buy fine clothing for the trousseau. But you have to remember that when a woman gets married and goes to another family, she cannot live the next 365 days of the next year as a bride. She has other responsibilities and there must be things that she needs for every occasion.

I always recommend traditional and cultural clothing to invest in because what you take along with you to your new home represents the values of your family but the best things to put in your trousseau are family heirlooms which are irreplaceable and priceless.

Q3. What's the one bridal trend to watch out for in 2015 ?

Sabyasachi:  2015 is going to be the year when we return to the roots. Think tradition, heritage and conventional ideas. Another thing - it is going to be the emergence of monochrome in the wedding scenario and that means, we are awaiting a very purist movement. On the other side, people will also look at the emergence of cocktail wear which is inspired by the 1920s.

Q4. Any thoughts on groom wear for 2015?

Sabyasachi: Men in India are suddenly realising the importance of "Being Indian" on special occasions. They are not ready to wear a bandhgala with trousers any more, they want to wear them with a churidhar. They want to wear achkans and anghrakas. 2015 is a big focus for Sabyasachi menswear.

Q: How should the groom complement the bride in terms of outfits?

Sabyasachi: We design understated clothing for the groom because the woman is dressed in complete bridal finery, the groom should step backward a little to complement her. It is not an ego battle but I think that when two people are trying to outdo each other, two positives in fashion can create a huge negative. Therefore, if the bride is dressed in a very ostentatious way, it is absolutely fine for the groom to be dressed in an understated manner. One has to realise that on the wedding day, the bride and groom should also look good as a couple and it not of primary importance for them to look great individually.

Q:What does the Sabyasachi 2015 colour story look like ?

Sabyasachi: The colour palette for my latest collection is sombre and dark. Starting from blacks to greys then moving on to gun-metals, sand, distressed ivories, and finally ox-blood.

Q: What About The Fabrics?

Sabyasachi: The entire collection has pre-dominantly been fashioned on tulle and textured in a way that the fabrics look like baroque hides.

The Vogue wedding show is coming to town on 7th of August, and this highly curated luxury wedding exhibition is where you can meet and greet all the top designers and see their collections up close and personal. This is an invitation only event so make sure you register to get invites here
