First Day, First Show: Sabyasachi's Darkest Collection Yet At Couture Week 2015! #newbridalstyle

Amidst a rather sombre version of "Jeena Yahan, Marna Yahan" , with tattered drapes hanging from the ceiling at the Taj Palace Hotel , we waited with bated breath for "Bater" - the Sabyasachi couture collection at Amazon India Couture Week 2015. While the set looked like something of a dark, gloomy, horror movie with smoke rising up the stage and lighting that honestly made it almost impossible for us to see the detailing of these creations, this collection was Sabyasachi's turn onto the dark side. What we loved- the groom wear which was sharp and all on point. The womens wear - it wasn't for everyone , but if you are the discerning bride who wants to experiment with the dark, sexual side of Indian fashion, it may be up your alley.
The 6th Amazon Fashion Week was inaugurated by Sabyasachi and Christian Louboutin this year . A top designer whose clothes brides admire and a shoe designer whose coveted stilettos are under many a bridal lehenga. The power couple almost made us gawk at the sheer eccentricity of the show. The vintage collection was called "Bater", a bird that is seen as one of India's most common hunting birds. The show was dark and gloomy - so much like a scene from Game of thrones. From dull greys to deep browns to fire-engine reds and dark blues. It was "dark, gothic and sexual" like Sabya mentioned in the media.
Yes, we admit the sexual bit was a tad overwhelming too. With cleavage-baring jackets, skimpy bustiers and revealing arms. The signature looks are still there - the sweet maxi dresses with those panther belts, the sheer saris with embellished blouses and the maxi dresses with draped elements. There was a lot of work too - in terms of embroideries and embellishments. Zardozi, Badla Ka kaam, fine resham Ka kaam, Parsi work. Old embroideries + Modern ideas.
Rest is for the more discerning bride - someone who understands the presence of a cape jacket or even a long boxy jacket on a sheer lehenga. The men's collection on the other hand was classic and clinical - there was lots of surface embellishment and an interesting earthy palette. There were easy bandhgalas worn with shawls, sherwanis and Nehru jackets that came with embroidered sleeves - all pieces that could very easily be taken right off the ramp onto a fashion forward, modern groom.
If you are wise, you'll work these interesting lehengas with your own version of a bustier. Something a little traditional or a little conservative. Because sexy is being redefined here and while we are happy Sabya is pushing the envelope, we are looking out for brides who want his designs embedded in pure heritage and tradition. Is India ready for a sexy Sabya bustier? We're not sure. But, he's managed to make us want to work on a perfect body so we could just try it on for size!
