How to Get Your Lehenga to Flare + Do You Even Need it?

BY The WMG Bride | 22 Jul, 2016 | 55848 views | 3 min read

Remember when we gave you the scoop on new age designers we were totally crushing on? Well one of our readers commented on that post asking us to dish the details on how to get that gorgeous 'Ghera' or flare on your lehenga and we thought it must be something on a lot of your minds so here goes.

1. Fabric matters a great deal

You can have the widest can-can underneath possible, but fabrics like raw silk will always have a higher flare as they are stiffer, when compared to georgette or velvet which tend to fall in a more fluid way. Raw silk also gives you a straight, stiff but wide flare while the other fabrics give you a more of an A-line flare

 2. How many Kalis should a lehenga have

This is a lesser known fact but the number of Kalis a lehenga should have depends on your waist size as well as on how heavy a lehenga skirt is. The lighter the skirt, and the narrower the waist, the more kalis you can have. So if you are looking for a 20 Kali lehenga - do it in a lighter skirt for maximum effect and to go easy on the pocket.

3. Can Cans and Double Can Cans

Most lehengas come with a mesh inside called a 'Can-can' . These hold the lehenga in place . Some lehengas actually can have even two can can's attached for the maximum possible flare possible. Beware though because double can-cans can also make you look bulky

4. Where should the Can-Can be placed?

A lot of lehengas have a Can-Can starting right at the thigh area. While this may cause the lehenga to flare up, if you are heavier on the waist it will also make you look bulky. If you are slightly heavier, start your can can at the knee area for a more elegant flare.

5. Fluffing up your lehenga 5 minutes before

If there is one thing you do before you enter your wedding, it is to get your friends to take the Can- Can and pull it up. Can-Can tends to flatten with the weight of your lehenga and a quick 2 minute jolt of taking the edge of the mesh and pulling it upwards can ensure you make the entry of a lifetime.

6. Incorrect ways of storing your lehenga= Flare gone.

When you purchase your bridal lehenga, do not fold it up . Let it hang from a hanger somewhere so that your Can-Can is not crushed.

7. How much flare do you need

As much as everyone loves a full flare, how much flare you need is completely dependent on your body type. If you are wider at the bottom, look for a more fluid, less stiff flare for a slimming look. For a narrower waist, look for a flare which is big and wide and stiff.
