BY Garvita | 06 Sep, 2023 | 3786 views | 5 min read

After spending so many months planning your special day, 'wedding goof-up' sounds really scary! Right? While we know there's nothing perfect in life, every bride would be hell-bent on ensuring that their wedding celebration is a smooth ride. But is that even possible without the pitfalls? Nope! However, fret not, because we've got you covered.

To avoid the most common blunders, we decided to have a heart-to-heart discussion with our real brides in order to have an idea about the challenges they faced! So get, set and read on, and know what 'not to do' at your wedding!

Not assigning a person who manage the gifts. While the shagun envelopes were being given to parents, there was nobody to handle it after them. We misplaced a whole bunch of them along with gifts which was one big mistake because people kept asking us if we liked their gifts and we did not know what they gave! It was funny but something that is easily avoidable if you assign these tasks to a cousin or aunt!

Always always have a trial for your saree draping, especially a different drape. I was wearing a nauvari (9 yards saree) and while the MUA assured me that her drape artist knew how to drape it, she made a mess of it. I panicked and started crying. Thankfully my mum and maasis saved the day with a YouTube video tutorial. So do not make this mistake!

We hired a pretty good catering company, celebrity level, and did not do a tasting session with them as we had very little time from the time the wedding was finalised. We are Jain and they knew that but did not accommodate that because all the feedback and requirements were given at the tasting session which we did not do. Ended up with only half the menu, whatever they could manage last minute. It was sheer chaos. After this, my parents tell everyone in the family to go and double-check the food whenever there is a wedding!

This one is funny. At our cocktail party, my husband got a little tipsy and proceeded to dance in ways he hasn’t ever. He did a split and ripped his trousers. And as expected did not have a backup. He stayed in the loo while his other tipsy friends went and sourced a pair of shorts for him. So, in half of our photos, he has a tux on top and a pair of shorts at the bottom and it's an unforgettable story. But the moral here is, don’t do a split and have a BACKUP, even the grooms!

Not accommodating space for our videographer at the sangeet. Our sangeet seating did not have an aisle in the centre so the videographer did not have space to set up his camera. Since the seating was heavy sofas, it was difficult to change last minute so all my sangeet performances are from an angle instead of straight dead centre which I hate. So keep this in mind!

The biggest goof-up on my wedding day was my makeup! I trusted my makeup artist and skipped the trials, and what happened on the wedding day was no less than a nightmare. My makeup was disastrous and I started crying as soon as I saw my face in the mirror. Argghh, hate talking about it! Got it removed and redone, and was at peace post that! Will never recommend any bride to exclude the trial from their wedding checklist. You'll regret it if you do!

My mistake could have been avoided had I listened to my peers! I bought my jewellery before I finalised my wedding lehenga, and eventually, I was left with a dark green lehenga & dark green jewellery. Ummm.. had no plans to go monotone so I bought one more jewellery set to create a contrasting look. I could have avoided that extra expense and I totally take the blame for this idiotic goof up!

My wedding goof up was done by my mother! Yes, the most responsible person in our family. Right in between the pheras, the panditji asked for the mangalsutra, only for my mother to realise that she left it at home. Wow! Luckily, our venue was 10 minutes away from our home and she drove back to get it. The whole delay in pheras was hilarious though! However, I have heard this happening at too many weddings!

Ours was a technical goof-up that basically put my whole Sangeet to a halt! We all were ready to burn the dance floor and alas, we were left with no music. But my family being a crazy one, started singing the songs at the top of their voices to make do with the spoilt system. Some were ready to call the dholwalas to avoid me crying my heart out! But as soon it was fixed we managed to have the time of our lives despite wasting a good 2 hrs. I would really recommend the brides-to-be to keep this in mind while hiring a DJ!

Megha Says

I always wanted an Instagram-worthy cake for my wedding, but while was in a dilemma if it would reach the venue in good condition or not! I went ahead and took a plunge and spent 25k on the four-tier cake. And guess what? It reached the venue in the condition I prayed it never did. Smashed and how! Now there was a huge load of vanilla goop in the box. Since it was too delicious to be dumped, we ate it!
