Unique Experiences To Make Your Honeymoon Memorable! *The Non-Touristy Stuff!

BY Latha Sunadh | 19 Dec, 2017 | 975 views | 4 min read

Honeymoons are supposed to be about recuperating from the hectic-ness of a wedding. Heck, I just ate and slept and dipped my toes in the sea occasionally. But for 7 days, I just ate and drank and slept - rinse, repeat. That was 2007. In 2017, that's just a sheer waste of time and a fully paid holiday, innit? So what are couples up to now? From careful snooping of their Insta profiles and reading up too much on honeymoon trends, we came to a conclusion that there's more to just sight-seeing and eating. Honeymooners are opting to attend classes, try new experiences and generally doing a lot more than the usual. Here's a peek into the cool new things that make 2018 honeymoons.

Volunteer trip

It's all about giving back - try booking volunteer trips through farm owners on Airbnb and Help Exchange so you could work with the locals and help. Pick a skill and work with the community and you'll go back refreshed and happy.

Cooking classes

Well, pick a place and learn who makes the greatest food there. We went to Lisbon and heard of an Egg tart maker - anything you want to know - about the food - straight from the experts. Pasta-making, Paella making - you name it, you could try! We tried the Blue Elephant cooking classes in Thailand and it was 100% awesome.

Have coffee with a bunch of strangers

Have you seen Airbnb experiences? You could take a look and find activities that include meeting locals and chatting with them about life and things. Neat!

Fitness classes

We heard of this amazing place in Mexico, Rancho La Puerta that takes you through 50 daily fitness classes and activities including tennis, aqua fit, yoga, body pump and volleyball. Now, if you can't book in a resort - then just fo for your regular honeymoon and book one class at a fitness club nearby.

Adventure: Surfing and Diving

Well, this one's self-explanatory but diving and surfing lessons are a good way to come back from a honeymoon saying "I learned something new!".

YOLO Honeymoons

Since we live only once, why not try something out of your comfort zone. From milder ideas like the Bali swing to the terrifying Shark Cage Diving ( where you can see white sharks swimming around you while you swing in a cage - hmmm!)

Farming

Yeah, this is for those nature freaks who want to check out the slow pace of life. There are lots of amazing places in India and abroad which allow for honeymooners to be part of and help out with their farm. There's one closer to home, The Farm near Chennai and we loved it.

Looking for new spaces to stay: Pods or Ariel hotels

Honeymoons are no longer about staying in plush hotel rooms people. Choose from staying in sea forts to milder tree houses, ice hotels to pods to ariel rooms and more. Even sleeping in sewage pipes.

Music festivals

I know someone who plans a trip according to who is playing in that country or which music festival is on in that country. Yep, it's true. So pick an artist you love and plan a trip where you get to see him / her in concert.

Do an Instagram trail

Every city has some picturesque views but they might not be just hotels or monuments, they could be streets and cafes or even house fronts. So, do an Instagram trail just for fun. Inspired by Murad Osman, heehee.

Photoshoot in an unknown land

A friend's anniversary and she planned a photo shoot in Srilanka with a fashion photographer - what a cool idea, right? So pick a place and find that one person who can make you guys a portfolio.

Go on a Treasure hunt

Most cities now do organize fun treasure hunts for tourists - so cute right? This one in Florence is just too cool for school.

Hobby Life: Learn to fly a plane, Salsa class and try a Local craft

We've seen some real bizarre stuff that you can learn - Falconry or learning to fly a plane because why not? And then milder stuff like salsa classes and Fado singing, even learning a local craft.
