I went their last year for my engagement make up. Today a friend asked for recommendations for a wedding make up artist and I realized how important it is to share our experiences and help people make informed choices. My experience was overall scary. The two most important things in a service industry like makeup are: 1. How you treat your client and 2. How well is the outcome i.e. make-up. Well, she failed on both frontiers - the outcome and the overall experience. I had booked her for my engagement as well as wedding make up. On the day of engagement when I reached nobody cared how I wanted the make up to be like, by what time I needed to be done etc. The staff was treating their boss like a celebrity, even more important than the client. Sangeeta was busy with admin work, didn't acknowledge my presence. Then the staff came and did some preliminary work. I was getting late for the ceremony and asked them to expedite. The rest of the work was to be done by Sangeeta, but guess what - she was getting her own hair done few seats from me! Eventually she started my make up but there was so much attitude - she didn't ask about my preferences, didn't even see the color of my dress, didn't exchange any courtesies and just started putting layer upon layer. When my eyes watered during the eye makeup, I asked her to give me a minute but she just handed me a tissue and continued. No kind words, no empathy. I didn't like the attitude but there were hundred other things on my mind related to functions and I didn't say anything. The final outcome looked a little botched up and I conveyed to her a few suggestions how she can change a few things here and there. That annoyed her like anything - how can someone give suggestions to a celebrity make up artist!! She got agitated and said - " if some people are not naturally good looking she can't do anything about it" . Now imagine the enormity of this statement. It should not be said to anyone, and never ever to a girl who is going to be bride!! That was my tipping point. By that time my sister and a friend had reached. We paid and left. I had booked her for the next day as well. But that same night I searched frantically on the net and finally found a makeup artist in South Delhi. He did a fabulous job the next day. Most importantly he treated us nicely, heard my expectations patiently and gave all the time and attention a bride deserves. An instance for example - when my eyes watered he stopped, added eye drops, said that there is nothing to worry it happens sometimes, and did the eye makeup more gently. My wedding make up was praised by all and the pictures came out amazing. I was so glad that I changed the make up artist. Go there only if she knows you beforehand and hears your expectations or if you have an entourage of family and friends with you who can throw their weight around and make them pay attention. Otherwise be ready to face some celebrity tantrums.
