We love how the traditional handicrafts of India are getting a new-age reinvention in today's modern times. After Benarasi and Chikankari have got a new lease of life, now it's Phulkari- the traditional thread worm which is getting reinvented and how! Phulkari dupattas have always been around, but now we are spotting more and more Phulkari lehengas, and we think it looks amazing for something like the Mehendi!

While full phulkari lehengas with skirts look very festive and happy, this one with the pretty Phulkari blouse looks amazing doesn't it? Not just blouses, you have full blown Phulkari lehengas combined with other work and embroidery forms which look amazing! Check out this Sabyasachi panel work lehenga for example, which has some Phulkari work combined with other forms.

Typically Punjabi, Phulkari, which literally translates into ‘flower work’, has a history etched in the culture of Punjab. It is spun from the charkha. This pretty style of embroidery involves darn stitch on the wrong side of cloth with coloured silken thread, and looks amazing.

It's also something you can consider DIYing- pick a pretty Phulkari dupatta and design a simple and subtle lehenga around it to show off the beauty like this bridesmaid.

Another gem? Convert your Phulkari dupatta (if you have the heart) to a corset or a blouse with a plain skirt.

Not just florals, these days we see designers incorporating new styles and patterns, with Phulkari style threadwork embroidery.
