Gharchola sarees have been part of Indian handloom culture since years. The gorgeous saree originating from the Khambat (Cambay) region of Gujarat, gharcholas have been an integral part of Gujarati and Kutchi weddings for generations. In a poignant ritual, the mother-in-law presents this garment to the bride, not just as a gift, but as a sincere gesture of embracing her into the new family fold. This is owned by all Gujrati and Kutchi brides, as a part of being a married woman. It’s a perfect saree to wear for your immediate functions after the wedding or if you are a sister of the bride or groom!
Traditionally, gharcholas were made from silk or gaji silk, known for their shiny look and strength. They usually have colorful threads in red or green, mixed with golden zari threads, creating a beautiful checkered design. The fabric is divided into squares, either with white tie-dye dots or woven zari bands. Then, using a technique called bandhani, the squares are carefully tied and dyed, forming charming patterns like paisleys, peacocks, elephants, and even people. This saree saw a recent revival, thanks to the celebrities picking to style stunning gharchola sarees at wedding events. Want to see how you can style your very own gharchola saree or steal one from your mum’s closet?
