Sister Of The Bride Style: Meet Surina

BY Apoorva | 16 Jan, 2024 | 1314 views | 7 min read

When we saw the stunning wedding of Rovena and Karan against the backdrop of the gorgeous Bosphorus in Istanbul, we were in love! But we fell in love again with Surina, the lovely sister of the bride, who rocked one magnificent look after the other. From her outfits to the jewellery, everything was so elegant and absolutely bang on. Don’t believe us? Check out her stunning looks yourself!

Meet Surina

Look 1: Welcome Party

I wanted to do something a little funky and untraditional for the welcome party makeup look, knowing that the wedding looks would be more traditional. The welcome party was all about having fun and starting the wedding festivities off with a bang! I gave a lot of thought about the colours in my outfit and knowing that my dress would be chartreuse green - blue, orange or purple would be a complimentary pop of contrast based on colour wheel principle. I ended up picking blue as my focal contrast colour as soon as I saw my customized evil eye clutch - a nod to our wedding location Turkey - and centred my heels, clutch and eye makeup around blue. I spoke with Lekha specifically on how I wanted to incorporate the blue into my eyes - either in shadow or liner to bring the look together. Together Lekha and I settled on using a beautiful blue as a strong under-liner look. The rest of the makeup look was simple with a peachy blush and nude lip.

As the dress was one-shouldered and the night would be filled with dancing I chose to have my hair up. Madhuri created an up-do with two tendrils lightly curled framing my face.  I style this look with Dior Earrings [gift given by sister, the bride, day of the event], Bulgari watch with solitaire bracelet and evil eye bracelet & and a customized evil eye clutch

Look 2: Mandvo Pooja

The family all wore red and orange hues - individual looks but colour-coordinated. I have always loved Anita Dongre - her designs, brand and craftmanship and knew I wanted to wear one of her outfits. I felt like it was the perfect balance of traditional yet modern for the pooja. The outfit is organza silk with gold detailed embroidery - it consisted of a skirt, long kurta and I chose to pair it with a bandhani dupatta from my mom's collection to bring colour to the outfit.

For the pooja we kept the makeup neutral - with peachy blush and lips. We added nude/pink gloss and a small amount of highlight to brighten the look. Lekha did a great job of making the colours complimented the ruby red from the drop earrings and pearl/ruby necklace. Hair was free-flowing with a soft bouncy curl. I wanted to have my hair styled in a way which I myself would do, so looking back I would feel and look like myself.

Look 3: Sangeet

The theme for the Sangeet night was the evil eye and my sister and I both chose to wear silver outfits against the blue hues of the Bosphorus and the Sangeet decor. I fell in love with the structure and comfort of this Amit Aggarwal outfit - it looked contemporary and suited my personality. It was extremely light-weight and perfect for the Sangeet performances. As my outfit was all silver, we went with a metallic eyeshadow. We did a smokey eye with a wing effect in a rose gold shade. The smokey eye paired with curled lashes, and a slightly darker nude lip.

As our sangeet started on a boat ride down the Bosphorus I was cognisant of the wind as I picked my hairstyle - I opted for blowout with soft natural curls. The hair felt natural and something I felt confident in as I gave my speech at the Sangeet.

I styled it with waterfall diamond earrings and solitaire tennis bracelet made by our family jeweller!

Look 4: The Wedding

Jagjith Singh Doaj at Tarun Tahiliani in Mumbai assisted the family to select all of our wedding outfits to complement and coordinate each other. My sister chose her outfit first and then looking through the collection I fell in love with this lehenga which complemented her look. I loved the colour combination and the chikankari workmanship which is timeless. It was a custom-made TT lehengas in chikankari with jamesar kasheeda border paired with coloured kasheeda blouse and chinkankari dupatta, made of georgette and silk. The embroidery on the dupatta and the way it draped the outfit was perfect.

For the wedding day my makeup look was natural but with a statement. The look consisted of dark pink lipstick, a brown and pink smokey eye and dark brown eyeliner to match the many hues of my outfit. Throughout all my looks I have never liked a very heavy thick set of lashes - I was specific that only individual small lashes were used if needed. For the wedding we applied a few small added lashes to the outer corners. We went slightly heavier on the blush which picked up the pinks in my outfit and as the pherras were outside we also made sure to apply a lot of settings spray.

I looked through many pictures of sister-of-the-bride hair looks and spent countless hours on pinterest to find something which I felt would go with the outfit, suit me and also complement my sister. Madhuri looked at my inspiration pictures and brought the look to life better than I ever could have expected. The look was a half up - half down with two soft tendrils of hair framing my face. She braided and pulled my hair back into a pearl hairpiece which crowned the back of my head. The pearl hair piece complimented the pearl details in my outfit and my natural middle hair-parting was perfect for the tikka.

I wore a Polki Diamond choker necklace & diamond, gold and ruby jhumka earrings made by the family jeweller.

Look 5 – The Reception

My sister's emblem for the wedding was the pomegranate as it is a significant part of Turkish culture and on average pomegranate contains 613 seeds - and my sister and brother-in-law got engaged on 6/13. As the reception night decor paid homage to the pomegranate and was filled with beautiful shades of red when I looked for my outfit, I kept this in the back of my mind when shopping. I found my Mishru gown on the last day of my stay in India and fell in love with it. As I left for the US I didn't see the gown again until I reached Turkey the week of the wedding and was so relieved that it fit perfectly. The entire outfit covered in flower embroidery was easy to wear and felt like the perfect amount of a statement!

For the final event, we went with a strong mauve smokey eye look - we felt this was perfect for the evening reception look and made my eyes pop. The dark smokey eye was paired with a pinky/mauve blush and my signature nude lip from the week. For my hair, Madhuri did voluminous curls. I styled this with C-clip diamond earrings, a diamond solitaire necklace, a diamond tennis bracelet and a diamond and ruby bracelet all custom-made by a family jeweller!
