These Are The Wedding Foods That Everyone Hates! (No More Gulab Jamuns Guys!)

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding is about the food (after your lehenga, of course!) After all, catering costs can eat up a sizable portion of your budget (hey, feeding 1000 people ain’t cheap). But, over the years people attend hundreds of weddings and are now bored of some of the same old fanfare. Here are top food items that your guests are bored to death of having!

Gulab Jamuns & Usual Jilebi-Rabdi Combos It’s a standard at every Indian wedding. Oodles of chachni and gulab jamun which frankly everyone is bored of. WMG Recco: Give your Gulab Jamun or Kala Jamun a twist by serving it in martini glasses with chilled rabdi on the top!

Sugary Mocktails or Cocktails

Just adding oodles of sugar to every drink doesn’t make it taste good. Just the usual whiskey, beer and vodka fare is super boring! WMG Recco: Have a bar with beer and wine and have a couple of signature cocktails/mocktails created. This way the bartenders will have a limited amount of recipes to follow and will be less likely to screw it up. Add newer ideas like Green Apple / Iced Teas / Champagne Cocktails.

Food Trucks

We all love them, but nobody likes waiting in line in heels and heavy anarkalis! So put up smaller ones at mehendis and cocktails, but not a wedding. WMG Recco: Have your food truck only serve a part of menu like chaat or Mexican tacos or just desserts. That way the rush will be less and also it’ll be easier for the caterer to manage.

Chocolate Fountain

We’ll just say sticky and messy hands! Imagine kids running all over the place with chocolate-y hands and fingers. Frankly it’s too done and over with. WMG Recco: Instead of having a liquid fountain, have a dessert bar that allows you to enjoy chocolate coated strawberries and marshmallows, albeit pre-made!

Boring Salads The age old favourite of having a standard lettuce salad and the tomato-cucumber-carrot platter at the start of your food counter should be banned! And veggies look limp when they are out for too long. WMG Recco: In the world of healthy eating, you can have a fresh salad bar where they can be tossed then and there or better, just do away. Wedding are meant to be indulgent, so rice or rotis make a far more satisfying meal.

Hard To Eat Appetizers

We all love burgers and pizzas, but having a huge burger not only fills you up and doesn’t allow your guests to try something new, but also is cumbersome to eat at a wedding. WMG Recco: Mini grilled cheese sandwiches, mini-pizzas and bite-sized burgers are a fun idea, especially as starters!

Chewy Chicken Dishes

Yes, we all love the tikkas and butter chicken, but by the time the guests eat it, it’s a piece of rubber. No one likes dry chicken! WMG Recco: Have a live barbecue station for tikkas and kebabs to avoid rubber chicken. You can also specifically ask your caterer to cook chicken dishes last, just before the food counter opens. tanisha nikhar

Gluten-Free/ Vegan / Organic We know that eating healthy is great but weddings aren’t really the place. Why enforce your guests to enjoy your special diet? WMG Recco: Go for a few popular dishes if you really have to, but stay clear of anything raw, you don't know how it's catered, so you don't want your guests to fall sick!

Naked Cakes

It’s trending but the question people are asking is, “Did the baker run out of frosting?” Dry cakes are a complete no-no because while they are good to look at, they are not creamy and don't easily slip down - dry cake is not a good idea, ever! WMG Recco: Make sure your baker has enough cream cheese/buttercream happening between the sheets of cake.  For a safer bet, you can add a scoop of ice-cream on it when you serve cake. 1427115441_indivisual_bites

Clichéd Food Favours Dry fruits and Jar cakes as wedding favours is quite a passé. They are done to death and oh-so old-school. WMG Recco: You don’t need to get exotic or expensive. Creative wedding favours like healthy cookies or yummy macaroons can also be a good option!

Delicate Sea food 

Fish or even lobsters or maybe squid - these are not the right ones to choose at a big wedding because they all need to be dependent on how fresh they are. That in fact determines their taste. So look for foods that are easy to serve and don't mind being out for a while. WMG Recco: If you must have sea food, prawns area  good idea to consider. Or look at smaller appetizers that don't stay out long!

Anything spill-y or slippery

Burgers with too much sauce, pasta that's literally just slipping off the fork or parathas dripping in ghee - will not only spoil the clothes but give guests a bad experience! WMG Recco: Find appetizers and foods that are thicker and easier to eat. Limit your sauces and your liquid-y gravies.

Don't ever try a new cuisine at a wedding

Sushi is all super but it's not something people universally love. So make sure if you don't go all out to go to extremes. Good wholesome food is always a better idea. WMG Recco: If you really want to introduce something cool at your wedding, use it as an appetizer, in smaller quantities.
