BY Sakshi | 29 Sep, 2016 | 7297 views | 3 min read

We've majorly been crushing on dip dyed outfits, which is like ombre, but better! The best part is that the trend from the West which started with gowns, has quickly found its way to Lehengas as well! The bride below was all over the internets for wearing that beautiful DIY dip dye dress and we thought, why don't we do that our Indian outfits too.

So what is this trend?

It all started over Instagram, when this bride's friend uploaded this photo of the customised wedding dress, which the bride airbrushed herself with spray paint. This dip dyed wedding dress went on to be clicked on over two million times in under two days, and is now apparently the next big wedding trend. It even has a whimsical nickname- “wedding meets sunset”.

So, how is it different from Ombre?

Well , while ombre is more of a subtle , muted gradient fading from one color to another, a dip dye, is essentially a stark ombre . Think of it like dipping just one bit of the edge into dye and letting the color bleed into the other.

So, can this trend be 'Indianised'?

Of course! After ombre, dip dyed lehengas have become big, and look so so stunning! Of course, we wouldn't recommend DIYing it, which can mess a perfectly good lehenga! Here are a few ways you can Indianise it to perfection:

  1. Pick up material you like - preferably silky flowy material like georgette or crepe and ask your local tailor to dip dye it in a colour of your choice!
  2. Every city has a wholesale market and even fabric shops do dye, if you ask. it might cost you a bit more but it's totally worth it.
  3. Pick a passive colour like pink, pastel, white or beige and then dip dye a colour on it - so the bright colour and the dyeing really shows
  4. If you are looking to personalise a kurti or a lehenga to match the colours of your boy, then this is a great option.
  5. If you are adventurous, you could layer one colour over the other and make the dip dye job look more fabulous.
  6. Try this DIY lehenga for a small function instead of a big wedding so you could take liberties and do some fun stuff!

Whether you pick a gradual dip dyed or a stark one with contrasting colours, this is an amazing look for almost any function!
