What Happens in a Walima Ceremony?

Walima is the wedding banquet that is hosted by the groom's family after the Nikah ceremony. It is a recommended practice (Sunnah) in Islam and is culturally based on Prophet Muhammad's traditions. It demonstrates gratitude for the marriage blessing and announces the marriage to the community.

It is traditionally hosted by the groom's family and guests from both the families are invited and there is a special feast with elaborate food arrangements. The purpose is to formally announce the marriage and seek prayers and blessings for the couple.
The Walima has different regional interpretations across Muslim communities and varies in scale from intimate to grand celebrations. It may also span multiple days in some cultures.
