Paithani saree is named after a place called Paithan in Aurangabad, Maharashtra where these sarees are handwoven. Marathi bridal outfit is a Paithani saree with elaborate gold borders in vibrant colors. The most common color combinations are yellow ochre or marigold yellow with green or purple borders. These sarees can be either Paithani 6 yards or Nauvari sarees measuring 9 yards.
These sarees have unique designs across border and pallu. It also has some kaleidoscopic effects which are arrived at by using different colors for weaving lengthwise and widthwise. Most of the Paithani motifs are influenced by Ajanta caves and Buddhist paintings because of its proximity to the place.
