BY Latha Sunadh | 09 Oct, 2017 | 7039 views | 5 min read

Is your bestie or sister getting married? Ooooh, girl! We can feel the excitement all the way over here. But if you’ve been pronounced bridesmaid then let us be the ones to break it to you – it’s not all shopping and shenanigans! Sorry to burst your Swarovski encrusted bubble but there are a lot of unspoken duties every bridesmaid has to perform.

Don’t you worry child, WMG has a plan for you. Here we are making your life so much easier by walking you through it all. Psst, this basically guarantees your entry into ‘The Bridesmaid Hall of Fame’. You’re very welcome! (And no, we didn’t just make that up).

  1. Magically get a psychology degree because girl, you are now officially a therapist.

Weddings can be super stressful and emotionally a lot to handle – especially for the bride. She’s going to need you by her side playing the role of the completely calm and composed counselor who has aced the art of giving opinions when needed and just being her sounding board when needed. The key is to know which is when.

  1. Drop everything you’re doing, because you are a newly appointed personal shopper.

No, it doesn’t matter if shopping is not your thing. The bride wants or needs your help and so you have to go to a local market on a scorching summer day to find that exact latkan from her Pinterest board. Okay? Okay!

  1. Start caring about brown bread vs. white bread because you are now officially a nutritionist.

It’s your bestie’s wedding. She is going to obsess over that juice cleanse. Yes, it is going to change the way you eat for the next few months too. Our advice? Stock up on chocolate and eat it once you are back from your carb-free dinners! No one said this bridesmaid business is going to be easy.

  1. Ever played the Bad Cop? Well now’s your chance!

If you’re someone who has a hard time saying ‘No’ to people then we suggest you get in some practice. When you are a bridesmaid, you have to have the bride’s back. This means keeping her away from pesky relatives or unwanted situations. Yes, you’re going to have to get really good at playing Bad Cop to her Good Cop.

  1. Was financial planning your dream career?

Today’s brides are all pretty savvy and equally involved in money matters as the groom or as her parents. This means your opinion is going to be needed often regarding big spends. And no matter how bad you are at figuring out all-things-money, you’re going to have to up your game! Yes, this also means being the person who keeps her in check every time she overshoots her trousseau budget.

  1. Social Media Manager at your service, Ma’am!

It doesn’t matter that your own Instagram profile is private and that you haven’t uploaded anything in the last two months. For the purpose of this wedding, your social media game has to be strong! Yup, you can’t miss all the important moments like recording a slo-mo twirl as the bride sashays in her lehenga or her face when she first sees her groom or even a boomerang with all the bridesmaids. So even if no one told you this was your official duty, you best believe it is!

  1. The Official Party Starter

As the bridesmaid, it is one of your main duties to always make sure it’s one hell of a rocking party. This could be the bachelorette (which is mainly your responsibility, obvs) or it could be the Haldi ceremony. You’re going to have to bring your ‘A Game’ to this wedding and that includes being Miss Congeniality!

  1. Be the bartender !

You need to be just the right amount of happy high, and you need to make sure the bride is getting her fix too. Sometimes this is going to need ninja skills and absolute discretion, but hey – you gotta do what you gotta do! Yup, you are somewhat of a bartender at this wedding, even at the smaller functions. Deal with it, or shall we say, give it a shot!

  1. Support System 101

When you are the bridesmaid, you’re not only on bride duty, believe it or not! You’re the go-to gal for everyone involved in the wedding. So yes, that could mean the groom too. But it most definitely means her family. Her parents are going to be looking for support from you; this could be in tasks or emotional moments. Make sure you’re there for them. :)

  1. Mirror, Mirror Off The Wall?

If there was ever a time in your life to be totally transparent and honest, it is NOW. Yes, you’re the *only* one the bride trusts with decisions like ‘are these too many flowers’ and ‘should I tone down the eye makeup’. Don’t lie your way out of this. Instead be like a mirror to her, albeit with gentleness and tact. Trust us when we say, it’s exactly moments like these that define the very reason she chose you to be her trusted bridesmaid.
