Intimate Cross-Culture Kolkata Wedding With Female Pandits & No Kanyadaan

BY Sakshi | 25 May, 2022 | 2557 views | 3 min read

What happens when a Bengali bride marries a Tamilian groom? A wedding which was unique of course, but also broke tradition. This couple made sure their wedding was unconventional in their own way, with no outdated customs like Kanyadaan and even had female panditains perform their ceremony. The verses were explained in English for everyone's benefit, and this intimate wedding had a very warm and cosy vibe. Anandiya and Vishal's wedding shot by WhatKnot Photography★ 4.7 has so many nice ideas for cross-culture weddings to imbibe!

Meet Anandiya and Vishal

I and Vishal were in the same school. We studied together since class 1. We were friends, then best friends and gradually our friendship matured into a relationship. On 26th December, he proposed to me in my favourite place, the beach and I said, yes. We tied the knot 1 year later.

From The Bride:

Vishal and I always wanted a backyard type of wedding in a pretty lawn and we found the perfect venue at the Kenilworth Hotel, with its heritage charm in Kolkata. Vishal and I got married in an unconventional way breaking all the traditions. We married through a Bengali Vedic ceremony performed by 4 priestesses who are professors in their own fields. The wedding was performed through vedic chantings and Rabindra sangeet recitals. The Rig Vedic form of wedding did not have any traditional rituals such as Kanyadaan or Bidaai. The verses were explained in English. The wedding highlighted on equanimity and equality where the bride and the groom walked hand in hand together to the mandap and also not only the groom but also the bride puts vermilion on the forehead of the groom. Through the wedding festivities we followed the three R's of conservation. Even our wedding card was made of plantable seed paper made of marigold and basil seeds.
